Specialist note

The Drawing Room window-pier games-tables are brass-inlaid in golden ribbon tablets after the French 'boulle'’ fashion, while the Grecian urn-based pillars rise from 'altar'’ plinths, wosoe 'claws' scroll from festive bacchic paws that conceal castors. In 1810 tables of similar form were supplied for Papworth Hall, Cambridge by George Oakley (d.1840), who had received a court appointment in 1802 and in partnership with various other cabinet-makers such as George Shackleton and George Seddon, produced fashionable 'buhl'’ inlaid Grecian furniture.
