The shaped rectangular moulded top above a frieze applied with paterae and husks, on square tapering legs applied with husks, on bulb feet, losses to applied husks, with printed armorial label pasted on the underside 'Sir Montague John Cholmeley Bart'

Probably Montague Cholmeley (1743-1803) and by descent to
Sir Montague John Cholmeley, 2nd Bt. (1802-1874), Easton Hall, Lincolnshire, and by descent.

Specialist note

The sideboard-table, with bas-relief libation-paterae festooned in beribboned laurels, is designed in the George III 'Roman' fashion popularised by The Works in Architecture of Robert and James Adam, 3 vols, 1773-1822.
The unusual construction and use of carved mahogany applied to wire, a technique used in the construction of delicate carved peripheral elements on mirrors, suggests that this table was not constructed by a cabinet-maker, but a maker more familiar with carving mirrors or giltwood. It was probably constructed by an estate workshop on the Cholmeley family estate in Lincolnshire.
