Each shaped oval, on fluted pedestal foot, body with eight panels, each with chased foliage and fruit, with swing handle, in original fitted chamois-lined case, marked on rim, under base; the side of foot stamped ODIOT A PARIS overstruck with AUCOC

Dr. Ernest Granville Crabtree (1883-1947) was a graduate of Harvard Medical School, Chief of the Urological Department at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, and President-elect of the American Urological Association at the time of his death. Admiral Richard E. Byrd, Arctic explorer and Chief of Naval Operations for the U.S. Navy during World War II, wrote of Dr. Crabtree: "In my long and active career I have never met a man I admired more than I did Granville Crabtree . . . Crabtree's was one of the finest and most beautiful characters that one could think of in life or literature" (Letter to Mrs. Granville Crabtree, June 5, 1947).

Specialist note

Charles-Nicholas Odiot became head of his father's firm in 1827. The present baskets, in English taste, reflect Charles-Nicholas's training in the Garrard workshops in London from 1821 to 1823.
