'I did not smoke Ashley Dickeon's pipe near the Pole, but did at winter quarters'. Shackleton has been 'on the rush lecturing', but is 'glad you have not forgotten me', and is only now able to reply to his friend's 'kind letter', having had 'to leave Braham Castle early the next morning'.
