Specialist note

Richard Cork comments, 'Not all these late drawings depict a landscape unalleviated by vegetation. One study juxtaposes the starkness of the distant Ronda rock with richly foliated trees [the present work]. Filling the foreground with their density and bulk, they offer shelter to anyone oppressed by the hard, empty countryside beyond. But even here Bomberg has parcelled up the trees' contours into spare angular segments which reveal a continuing debt to Cézanne and affirm a preference for austerity' (loc. cit.).
