Specialist note
Alexandre Maigret, maître in 1787.
The present lot was executed by the ébéniste and tapissier Alexandre Maigret (fl. 1780-1825). One of the foremost Fournisseurs du Garde-Meuble from circa 1805, Maigret supplied furniture to most of the Imperial residences, including the châteaux de Versailles, Fontainebleau, Saint-Cloud, the Petit Trianon and the Tuileries after it became Napoléon I's official residence. First mentioned in the late 1770s, Maigret worked as a cabinet-maker but also as an upholsterer or 'tapissier' and supplied many métiers à broder for Empress Marie-Louise. His oeuvre is undoubtedly closely related to that of his fellow cabinet-makers and contemporaries Jacob-Desmalter and Pierre Marcion.
The 'Brockham Cottage' named by the label atop the table remains unidentified, but may conceivably indicate a provenance in the village of Brockham, Surrey.
