Specialist note

This painting is presumably based on a lost work by Lambert Lombard which survives through numerous copies, each with variations in the details. Other versions include examples sold at Christie’s, South Kensington, (4 May 2012, lot 10), at Sotheby’s, London (13 July 1983, lot 80) and Ader Tajan, Paris, (16 December 2016, lot 2). The present lot is distinguished from these examples by its superior quality and the presence of the dog and cat in the foreground.
