A ROMAN BANDED AGATE DISC-SHAPED ATTACHMENT
CIRCA 2ND-4TH CENTURY A.D.
With gently convex surface, the underside with hexagonal-shaped central shallow raised section with a flattened surface
3 ½ in. (9 cm.) diameter

London art market, 1998.
with Oliver Hoare Ltd., London, 2012.

Specialist note

When published in 2016 it was suggested that this object was a pommel or sword hilt. The flat surface of the hexagonal raised section with wear around the edges may also suggest it might have been a vessel lid, with the raised section forming the neck, to prevent movement and provide a snug fit.
