Specialist note

This work ultimately derives from a painting of The Blind Leading the Blind (Museo di Capodimonte, Naples) by Pieter Brueghel I, who pioneered the depiction of proverbs and parables in scenes of everyday life. Pieter Brueghel II expanded on his father's composition, adding architectural elements, figures and inserting a village kermesse in the distance. The present picture shares many similarities with a version in the Rijksmusuem Twenthe, Enschede, given to the Studio of Pieter Brueghel II.
