Specialist note

The present work was modeled in 1895 in Proctor's New York studio upon his introduction to a New York lawyer who requested a portrait of his mount. Proctor recalled: "Dixon, a lover of good horses, owned a fine Arab stallion, which had been bred in the stables of the czar of Russia and had on his neck the czar's brand, a crown. Dixon commissioned me to do a small portrait model of the horse and was so pleased with the small statuette that he gave me permission to have bronze casts made for sale" (A.P. Proctor, Alexander Phimister Proctor: Sculptor in Buckskin, An Autobiography, Norman, Oklahoma, 1971, p. 131) There are nine located examples of this cast known today.
