Specialist note

The painting appears to relate to a portrait by Russel of Lucy Percy, sold Sotheby's, Colonnade, 27 September 1994, lot 8. The composition is probably derived from Sir Anthony van Dyck's double portrait of Lucy Percy and her sister, Dorothy, Countess of Leicester, in the Morrison Picture Collection at Sudeley Castle, Leicestershire.
