GUSTAVE BAUMANN (1881-1971)

According to Chamberlain, Marigolds and its companion piece Zinnias, were conceived of as prints in a rectangular format with a scalloped oval border surrounding the bouquets. The woodcuts included a white oval guideline to be followed when the rectangle was cut down for framing, which is why Baumann placed his signature at the foot of the vase rather than in the margin.
