A PAIR OF CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN FAMILLE ROSE SOUP PLATES
QIANLONG PERIOD, CIRCA 1745
Each painted at its center with two cockerels perched on blue rockwork within a shaped rocaillerie border of brightly colored shell, scroll and trellis devices around the rim
9 ¼ in. (23.5 cm.) diameter

Acquired from H. Woods Wilson Ltd., London, by Ann and Gordon Getty in 1986.

Specialist note

The distinctive rocaillerie border design to the present dishes is so far known on only two other groups: the famous Dutch-market blue and white tea production series and an armorial service historically attributed to the Snoeck family of Amsterdam, although Jochem Kroes has argued that the coat-of-arms on that service belongs instead to Elias Guillot (1695-1743), Governor of Coromandel from 1733-1737, who may have ordered his service after settling in Batavia, Indonesia following his governorship. For a discussion of the border and its design origins in Rouen faience, as well as a discussion of the Snoeck family, see C. Le Corbeiller, China Trade Porcelain: Patterns of Exchange, New York, 1974, pp. 102-103, no. 42. For a discussion of Elias Guillot, see J. Kroes, Chinese Armorial Porcelain for the Dutch Market, Zwolle, 2007, p. 324, no. 242.
