Specialist note
This mirror exemplifies the English ‘picturesque’ style popularized by designers such as Thomas Chippendale in his The Gentleman and Cabinet-maker’s Director (1754-1762), Thomas Johnson, and Matthias Lock, who likely supplied designs for Chippendale’s publication. The wonderfully sculptural and exotic ‘ho-ho’ birds recall those in the extraordinary rococo interiors at Claydon House, Buckinghamshire by the carver Luke Lightfoot (1722-1789).
