nineteen sheets initialed and variously dated '30 December 1916' - '7 May 1941', some with inscriptions
seven pencil, two coloured chalks, fourteen pencil and coloured chalks, all on buff paper; the loose drawing pencil and coloured chalks on paper
the album: 14 1/8 x 10 in. (36 x 25.5 cm.) the sheets: 14 x 9 ½ (35.5 x 24 cm.)

Specialist note

Several of the drawings in this sketchbook relate to figures seen in Up from the Sea, painted in 1920 and now in Nottingham Art Gallery. Southall was fascinated by the sea and coastal life, and much of his work takes these themes as its subject.
