Specialist note

This picture relates to a painting of the same subject in the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille, which is landscape in format. The precise nature of the relationship between the two is still not entirely clear. In 1986, Werner Sumowski (loc. cit.) published the present work as an autograph fragment, from which the Lille painting was copied by another hand. Bernhard Schnackenburg (loc. cit.) attributes both paintings to Lievens, publishing the present work in 2017 as an autograph reduced replica of the Lille painting, with the composition contracted to make it upright in format.
