In 1936, in Rome, during a conference in the conventual hall of the Holy Apostles, Maurice Denis, after a series of stays in our country defined “seconde patrie”, states that the first two trips he made to Italy were fundamental for his artistic career. In fact, these represent the fundamental stages that, from symbolism and Gauguin, will lead him towards what he himself will call “nouvel ordre classique”.
[…] In Rome “rien n’est laissé au hasard”; agreement, balance and homogeneity reign supreme, and it is precisely in this close cohesion that, according to him, lies the true and lasting beauty of all the masterpieces of humanity, especially those of classical art, model of weighting and measurement.
