Specialist note
A highly comparable painting, potentially depicting the same sitter but with slight differences and bearing an attribution to Barent Fabritius, was offered Dorotheum, Vienna, 24 March 2004, lot 375. The present painting exhibits several pentimenti visible in the hat which appear to be lacking in the other version, indicating the latter may be a copy after this work.
