St John the Baptist and Sts Peter and Paul, two historiated initials on a bifolium from a Missal, use of the Augustinian Hermits, in Latin, illuminated manuscript on vellum [north-eastern Italy, 1490s]
A large bifolium from a Missal for Augustinian use painted in north-eastern Italy with two fine historiated initials.
Each leaf 355 x 250mm. Modern pagination ‘335-336’ and ‘341-342’, the first rubric on p.335 opens the introit for the Vigil of St John the Baptist, two columns of 32 lines, ruled space: 230 x 165mm, rubrics in red, one- to three- line initials alternately in red flourished with light blue and in dark blue flourished with red or purple, two historiated initials on burnished gold grounds: p.336 initial ‘D’ opening the introit for the Nativity of John the Baptist (‘De ventre matris mee’) with a full-length border extension with terminal sprays of scrolling penwork tendrils supporting foliage and disks of colours and gold; p.341 initial ‘N’ opening the introit for the feast of Sts Peter and Paul (‘Nunc scio vere quia misit’) with a marginal extension of scrolling acanthus leaves and penwork tendrils (remnants of support at hinge).
