Specialist note

“The powerful pictoriality of Bontecou’s drawings catapults the viewer into fantastical atmospheres and ecosystems. In so doing, they circumvent, if not threaten, crucial (particularly modernist) frameworks with liberated aplomb. Their importance lies not only in their unique engagement of illusionism but also in their visualizations of quixotic, alternative worlds that propose new ways of seeing and understanding our own physical world” (M. White, “Lee Bontecou’s Drawn Worlds,” Lee Bontecou: Drawn Worlds, Houston, 2014, p. 19).
