The tray top above a frieze carved with scrolling flowers centered by a shell against a pounced ground, raised on cabriole acanthus-carved legs terminating in paw feet

Specialist note

The form and ornament of this table with the dished top and spiked foliate scrolls on the legs typifies Irish furniture of the mid-18th century. The pounced ground offsets the fluid carving with shell and flower motifs. The squared carved paw feet seen here are also a frequent feature and can be compared with another example in the McDonnell Room at Malahide Castle, Co. Dublin (G. Kenyon, The Irish Furniture at Malahide Castle, 1994, pp. 90-91). Further related examples are illustrated in Glin and J. Peill, Irish Furniture, New Haven, 2007, p. 239 figs. 145-7.
