lithograph, on Hanga paper, 1978, signed and dated '77' in pencil, numbered 'H.C. 4/4' (an hors-commerce impression, there was no edition), published by Universal Limited Art Editions, West Islip, New York, with their blindstamp, the full sheet, in very good condition, framed.
Sheet: 38 7/8 x 27 ¼ in. (987 x 692 mm.)

Specialist note

This extremely rare print's title is for the French novelist, Louis-Ferdinand Céline. His writings convey both cynical attitudes and an attention to death, themes that Johns also regularaly explored in his artistic practice. A painting, also titled Céline from the same year, comprises a series of handprints and crosshatches.
