“What motivated you to begin the series of Bathrobes pictures?
- Well, I had been seeing a psychiatrist for two, maybe two and a half years. I was focusing on myself, obviously, and I’d been trying to make a self-portrait besides just looking in the mirror. I thought there must be some other way to make a self-portrait […]. One Sunday, in the New York Times, I saw this ad for bathrobes and it was a bathrobe with nobody in it. It looked like me. It looked like my physique. So I thought, if I use this, I really can make a miraculous self-portrait. And it was a found object, you could say. And that’s how it began.”

- Eh bien, je voyais un psychiatre depuis deux ans, peut-être deux ans et demi. Je me concentrais sur moi-même, évidemment, et j'avais essayé de faire un autoportrait en plus de me regarder dans le miroir. J'ai pensé qu'il devait y avoir une autre façon de faire un autoportrait […]. Un dimanche, dans le New York Times, j'ai vu cette publicité pour des peignoirs et c'était un peignoir sans personne dedans. Ça me ressemblait. Cela ressemblait à mon physique. Alors j'ai pensé, si j'utilise ça, je peux vraiment faire un autoportrait miraculeux. Et c'était un objet trouvé, pourrait-on dire. Et c'est comme cela que ça a commencé." - Jim Dine
