A muff chain is an exceptionally long chain worn around the neck and fastened through a lady’s muff- the cylindrical accessory of fur or fabric used to keep one’s hands warm in the winter. Muff chains were popularized in the late 18th and 19th centuries and crafted in a variety of styles. Many Georgian and early Victorian muff chains comprised a belcher link chain- a open rounded gold link that originated in Britain in the 18th century- or fancy link gold chains that terminated in a clasp of a sculpted gold hand.
