ANDRÉ MASSON (1896-1987) ET MARCEL JOUHANDEAU (1888-1979)

Court texte érotique et violent, Ximenès Malinjoude est dédié par Marcel Jouhandeau à Michel Leiris, qui servit d'ailleurs de source d'inspiration pour quelques traits du personnage éponyme, à la faveur de la brève relation amoureuse des deux écrivains. Le texte, écrit en 1924, avait été présenté à Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler dès l'année suivante. L'éditeur s'était montré très enthousiaste, refusant même de céder les droits du texte à Gallimard, pour pouvoir le publier lui-même. Les six eaux-fortes originales dont André Masson ornent l'édition matérialisent à merveille la "phosphorescence fugitive" qui émane des personnages de Jouhandeau.

A short erotical and violent text, Ximenès Malinjoude is dedicated to Michel Leiris, with whom Marcel Jouhandeau had been briefly infatuated and who served as an inspiration for the titular character. Written in 1924, the text had immediately sparked the interest of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, who planned on publishing it, even refusing to sell the rights to Gallimard. André Masson made six etchings which perfectly evoke the violence of the text, and the "fleeting phosphorescence" of the characters.
