Vers 1919, Picasso crée un certain nombre de natures mortes innovantes et lyriques, dans lesquelles il conjugue une approche inédite de la ligne et de la couleur avec une atmosphère chargée de romantisme et de musicalité.
La musique a longtemps intéressé Picasso. À l'époque où il produit Guitare et compotier, il fréquente de près les milieux musicaux parisiens, côtoyant aussi bien des compositeurs comme Eric Satie ou Igor Stravinsky que la communauté du ballet : il se lie notamment d'amitié et collabore avec Sergei Diaghilev, l'impresario des célèbres Ballets russes, compagnie dont Picasso vient en outre d'épouser l'ancienne danseuse étoile, Olga Khokhlova. Instrument emblématique de son Espagne natale, la guitare semble ainsi trouver tout naturellement sa place au cœur de la présente œuvre. Si une certaine esthétique néo-classique traverse encore de nombreux travaux du peintre durant cette période, ici aussi Picasso semble regarder en arrière, vers un passé plus innocent peut-être, marqué par la culture espagnole et une longue tradition de natures mortes qui renvoie à Zurbarán ou Cotán. L'artiste renouvelle toutefois le genre en réinventant non seulement la démarche des maîtres mais aussi son propre répertoire artistique. Dans Guitare et compotier, les champs de couleur sont en effet largement composés de structures essentiellement géométriques qui rappellent le purisme de Léger, Le Corbusier ou Ozenfant, cet autre courant du Rappel à l'ordre que tant d'artistes adoptent au lendemain de l'Armistice, en réaction au chaos et aux bouleversements de la Première Guerre mondiale. Au fond, la quête du purisme et de la peinture néo-classique reste la même : la recherche d'un ordre éternel et absolu.

Music had long interested Picasso, and during the period in which he executed Guitare et compotier, many of his friends and acquaintances were involved with music, be it as composers, such as Eric Satie and Igor Stravinsky, or through ballet: he was a friend and collaborator with Sergei Diaghilev, the impresario of the legendary Ballets russes, and had married Olga Khokhlova, that company's former prima ballerina. This made the inclusion of the guitar a logical one in Guitare et compotier, all the more so since it is an instrument so closely related to his native Spain. Considering the Neo-Classical aesthetic that was still present in some of Picasso's other works during this period, this link to Spain and its own still life tradition in the works of artists such as Zurbaran and Cotán shows the artist looking backwards, perhaps towards more innocent times; however, he has revolutionised and reinvigorated the genre, both in terms of the history of art and in terms of his own development. In Guitare et compotier, the fields of colour are largely comprised of fairly geometric structures, recalling the Purism of artists such as Léger, Le Corbusier and Ozenfant that characterised another side of the Rappel à l'ordre that had been the response of so many artists to the chaos and turmoil of the First World War. In Neo-Classicism and Purism alike, there was a quest for a timeless sense of order.
