Specialist note
The present relief of the Deposition recalls the work of artists active in the north of Spain in the second quarter of the 16th century. In particular, the somewhat square faces, mournful expressions and shortened body types recall the work of the sculptor Damián Forment, who moved from Valencia to Saragossa in 1509. Among all his works, the lot offered here probably most closely relates to the altarpiece he executed for the cathedral of Huesca, north of Saragossa, between 1520 and 1534 (for images of the latter see Weise, loc. cit.).
