How to sell

A NORWEGIAN BIRCH PEG TANKARD
17TH CENTURY
The cover carved in relief with a lion and unicorn supporting an armorial shield within rope twist border, the drum with depictions of the four evangelists within arches applied with turned studs, the handle and foot rim with bone inlay and the sides of the handle and shield on the cover applied with turned beads
8 ½ in. (21.6 cm.) high

Acquired from A & E Foster, Buckinghamshire.

Specialist note

The shield on the cover is unusual in that the heraldic supporters for the void shield are the lion and unicorn of Britain. The combination of the English lion and the Scottish unicorn dates to the accession of James I in 1603 who was already James VI of Scotland.
