Chen Zhongren, a native of Jiangyou (now Jiangxi), was the younger brother of Chen Lin. Exceling in landscapes, figures and bird and flower paintings, Chen was the President of Anding College of Huzhou and engaged in artistic exchanges with Zhao Mengfu. His bird and flower paintings were praised by Zhao as being even better than those of Huang Quan of the Five Dynasties.
Birds and Flowers was exhibited twice before the war in Hong Kong at Fung Ping Shan Chinese Library of Hong Kong University and documented in the Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings by S. M. Siu.
