LATE 14TH OR 15TH CENTURY AND PARTS POSSIBLY LATER
AN UPPER RHINE BEECH MINNEKÄSTCHEN
The sides carved with mythical beasts, the lid carved with a dragon
5 ½ in. (14 cm.) high, 10 ¾ in. (27.3 cm.) wide, 6 ½ in. (16.5 cm.) deep

Specialist note

Many of these caskets were produced in the Upper Rhine in the 14th and 15th centuries, some probably as betrothal caskets, others as commemorative boxes. The hatched background is quite typical of late 14th Century work, as well as the iron mounts and flower-head terminals.
