Katsuizumi Sotokichi (1889-1985), an economist, author and pacifist, attained his Masters in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1922, before working for the Yokohama Specie Bank in Beijing from 1925-1932. Afterwards, he held several key positions at the bank’s head office and dedicated his life to peace and anti-war effort.
Mr. Katsuizumi had a passionate interest in Chinese paintings, and in particular those by Qi Baishi. During his time in Beijing, he befriended the artist and acquired a large number of his works, symbolising a special friendship between himself and the artist.
Several fine Qi Baishi paintings from the collection were sold in Christie’s 2011 spring sale (Lots 2838-2846).
