PU RU (1896-1963)
Lot 1462 FROM THE PRIVATE COLLECTION OF FANG ZHENWU (LOTS 1460-1464)
The collection was dedicated to Fang Zhenwu, a member of Hongmen in Shanghai, which is a Chinese fraternal organisation. He accumulated his fortune by transporting cotton yarn to Taiwan and operating real estate business in Beitou, Taipei. Fang and Pu Ru maintained a close friendship for over a decade since the latter’s relocation to Taiwan: Fang visited Pu almost every day; Pu also went to Fang’s house to paint frequently. Pu enjoyed travelling, and Fang often accompanied him on trips, covering all expenses for the artist. Thus, Pu often dedicated his exquisite works to Fang to express his gratitude. It is for this reason that Fang’s collection is home to numerous high-quality works by Pu Ru, making Fang not only one of Pu’s best friends but also his art patron.
