Specialist note
With finely-chased mounts characteristic of acclaimed bronziers of the Second Empire, the present cabinet is strikingly similar to a series of side-cabinets dating from the mid-19th century with bronzes by Victor Paillard and Christofle & Cie. The former was an apprentice to Denière and in his early prestigious career cast mounts for a dressing table for Empress Eugénie in 1855. By the 1870s, Paillard joined the firm of Fourdinois followed by Barbedienne thereafter (C. Payne, Paris Furniture: The Luxury Market of the 19th Century, 2018, p. 483).
