A LARGE DAMASCUS STYLE POTTERY DISH

Ulisse Cantagalli (1839-1901) founded the Manifattura Cantagalli in Florence in 1878 with his brother Giuseppe. The Cantagalli 'Iznik-style' ceramics can be identified by their signature cockerel ‘signature’ on the base of the vessels. Whilst Cantagalli produced designs directly inspired by Ottoman art and ceramics, the form of their vessels were not Ottoman but rather his own creations Denny, 2004, p.222).
Ottoman style vessels by Cantagalli have sold at Christie’s, South Kensington, 9 October 2015, lot 448, 22 April 2016, lot 419 and 22 October 2016, lot 143.
