Specialist note

Henrietta Maria, daughter and co-heir of John Banister, married, in 1771, Brownlow North, second son of Francis, third Baron Guilford and later first Earl of Guilford. He was Bishop of Lichfield in 1771, Worcester in 1774 and of Winchester in 1781. They had three sons, the eldest Francis North, 6th Earl of Guilford and their third son (depicted in the present portrait) both became Anglican priests. The sitter was rector of Alverstoke and Prebendary of Winchester and his son, also named Brownlow North (1810-1875) was a well-known 19th Century evangelist.
