Specialist note

Gerhard Richter’s work explores the proximity of photography and painting: many of his most iconic images are made after photographs, the artist exactly recreating their blurriness and cropping in paint. In Bagdad (P9), this process is reversed, as Richter multiplies one of his ‘Flow’ paintings, Bagdad, 2010, into a photograph of the exact same dimensions. The luscious colouring of the painting, made by trapping lacquer behind glass, is mirrored in the glowing, saturated pigment of this work. Produced by Heni Productions and the Serpentine Galleries under the artist’s close supervision, this work is a beautiful, accessible example by one of today’s most iconic artists.
