Specialist note
Designed in 1885 by John Beavor-Webb, the gaff cutter Galatea was owned by Lieutenant William Henn of the Royal Northern Yacht Club of Scotland. In the summer of 1886, the British yacht crossed the pond to New York to participate in the America's Cup, unfortunately losing the race to the American defender Mayflower. However, the following August Galatea proved her mettle, winning the Queen's Jubilee Cup at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron Regatta in Halifax. Interestingly, the beautiful and classic Victorian design of Galatea not only functioned as a competitive racing vessel but also included extravagantly sumptuous interior decoration, such as leopard-skin rugs and precious objects, and served as the main living quarters for Henn, his wife, their dogs, and even their pet monkey, from 1888 until the end of their lives.
