More Information
Specialist note
Around 1905, Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington became particularly fascinated with the great cats of the New York Zoological Society (today the Bronx Zoo). She was specifically captivated by their ferocious prize jaguar named Señor Lopez. Beginning in 1906, the Gorham Foundry cast at least nine models for the artist inspired by these cats.
The present version of Jaguar Reaching is stamped number 32 from an edition of 251. The stone base is inscribed "Digressionists," perhaps referring to Columbia University's Digressionist Club, an architecture society. Other examples of this model are in the collections of The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls, New York; the New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain, Connecticut; and the Newark Museum of Art, Newark, New Jersey.
