Lot 1434 “ Paradise is a haven, full of joy and carefree. I had long heard about the Bird Paradise in Xinhui, Guangdong, where one could find countless birds resting in the densely foliaged forest. I reckoned the scenery would be the paradise in my painting also, and had wanted to visit. It was raining heavily when I finally made it to Bird Paradise one day. A friend found a small boat, and we rowed towards it barefoot. I saw the jagged, wild and intertwining branches that almost resembled the cursive strokes in Chinese calligraphy. As we dove deeper into the trees upon arriving at the island, the birds, started by our intrusion, suddenly took flight – paradise was lost all of a sudden. I later painted Bird Paradise in search of the meandering lines, the order in the chaos, and the almost invisible birds hidden in the branches. And thus the paradise was found again.”
