Lot 125 “Fans don’t tear my clothes off or try to take a lock of my hair home to Junior. They stop me in the street mostly just to say hello — and that testifies that I can do something well. That’s all I ever wanted.” -Julia Meade
An American stage and screen actress, Julia Meade (1925-2016) was a renowned spokesperson in television and print advertisements. During the early days of television, Meade became a leading pitchwoman, performing live commercials for products including Kodak cameras, Life Magazine, and Lincoln automobiles. Described by a New York Times reviewer as “America’s first household name”, Meade could be seen weekly from 1953 to 1967 on The Ed Sullivan Show promoting the latest and most fashionable automobiles by Lincoln and Mercury.
Beyond the pitchwoman, Julia was a celebrated actress, winning the prestigious Sarah Siddons award for her role in the Chicago production of Mary Mary; a play by Jean Kerr, which garnered huge success and was one of the longest running productions in the 1960s. Meade’s extensive silver screen credits include Pillow Talk with Rock Hudson, Tammy Tell Me True with Sandra Dee, and Zotz! with Tom Poston.
Christie’s is honored to offer Meade’s delightful jewelry collection, including many early examples by the quintessential American jeweler, David Webb, who Meade knew personally. She was frequently photographed wearing his bold and iconic designs.
