Specialist note
At this vase's center is an iridescently-patinated peacock intended to resemble Japanese metalworks known as mokume. Similar designs incorporating this design are repeated throughout Cornu's oeuvre, particularly a number of onyx guéridons of either peacock or crane-form, such as two sold at Christie's, London, 23 September 2010, lots 75 and 76. Another vase of this form, mounted as a lamp, was sold at Christie's, New York, 19 & 20 October 2011, lot 63 ($26,250).
