Specialist note

Saito Yoshishige made a number of works in this series during 1966 and 1967, giving each the title 'Hanger'. Each features a distorted rectangular shape hanging by a central fulcrum against a monochrome background. Other examples were exhibited at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, in solo exhibitions of his work held in 1978 and 1984.

This particular work was the first of the series made and was kept by the artist until he died.
