More Information
Specialist note
The form and ornament of this chair relates to the designs of around 1770 by the London cabinet-maker John Linnell (d.1793) (H. Hayward and P. Kirkham, William and John Linnell, New York, 1980, pp. 42-43, figs.79, 83). The designs are particularly interesting due to close similarities to a chair design by J.C. Delafosse (Ibid, fig. 80) which illustrates the influence and awareness of contemporary French designs. The chairs further relate closely to a suite of armchairs and settees in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (op. cit., figs 84-85) and a further pair of this model sold Christie's, New York, 8 April 2004, lot 290.
