Specialist note

German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans made his name in the 1990s by creating unconventionally lit and seemingly casual photographs that won him worldwide recognition, including the Turner Prize in 2000. Having moved to London in 1996, he used street-style magazines such as i-D, Purple and The Face as outlets for his photographs, at the same time exhibiting around the world in destinations such as New York, London and Cologne.

In 2006, Tillmans moved away from this street-style portraiture to photograph everyday objects and spaces such as Paper Drop (Shadow). Pushing the boundaries of photography, in these works the subtle interplay of light, shadow, and colour become the focus in their own right.
