AN INDIAN TULWAR TAKEN FROM A MAHRATTA SOLDIER AT THE BATTLE OF MAHARAJPOOR IN 1843

With curved single-edged fullered blade double-edged towards the point and struck on one side with a series of crosses and dots, the latter forming two crescent moons, and iron hilt of characteristic form retaining some worn textile binding to the grip, with iron-mounted black leather scabbard, the locket engraved 'This SWORD was WRESTED from the hands of a Mahratta Soldier at the Battle of Maharajpour BY CAPTAIN Arthur William Fitz Roy Somerset of the Grenadier Guards and Military Secretary to Lord Ellenborough after he had received a Gun Shot through his right Arm and two severe Sabre wounds on the left thigh and under the right knee 29th December 1843'; together with an Indian matchlock toradar with triangular bone inlay to the butt, bone butt-cap, and iron mounts
