MAKER'S MARK POSSIBLY 'CIS', MOSCOW, CIRCA 1780
Circular, the detachable cover inset with a silver medal depicting Empress Catherine II in profile on the obverse, signed Timofei Ivanov, in Moscow, the base cast and chased with the medal commemorating the coronation of the Empress in 1762 in Moscow, signed Waechter and with Russian inscription: 'For the salvation of faith and Fatherland Coronation in Moscow Sept. 22 1762', the ground nielloed with draped cartouches with military trophies, on sunburst ground, the interior gilt, marked inside cover and base

Acquired by Friedrich von Keßler (1875-1933), great-grandfather of the present owner in St Petersburg between 1922 and 1925.

Specialist note

A similar silver and niello box inset with a medal depicting Empress Catherine II in profile and signed Timofei Ivanov, was sold Christie's, London, 26 November 2012, lot 376.
