Born in Deutschbaselitz (Saxony), 1938. Studied painting at the Hochschule für bildende und angewandte Kunst , East Berlin, 1956 and the Hochschule für bildende Künste, West Berlin, 1957-1963, also at Die Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Karlsruhe, 1978 and Hochschule der Künste, Berlin, 1983-1988. Solo exhibitions include: Kunsthalle, Basel, 1983; Whitechapel Gallery, London, 1985; Galerie Michael Werner Cologne, 2006; Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2007; Musée Cantini, Marseille, France, 2011; Between Eagles and Pioneers, White Cube, London, 2011. Group exhibitions include: XIII. Biennale, São Paulo, 1975; A New Spirit in Painting, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 1981; German Art in the 20th Century, Royal Academy, London, 1985. Winner of several prizes, including Julio González Prize, Valencia 2001 and Praemium Imperiale Award, Tokyo, 2004. Awarded Honorary Professorship, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 1999, and Honorary Professorship, Accademia di Belle Arti, Florence, 2004. He lives in Germany.
