John Piper visited Venice in 1959 in order to complete a series of Turner-influenced drawings in preparation for the 1960 exhibition Paintings and Watercolours of Venice by John Piper (The Arthur Jeffress Gallery, London, May- June 1960). St Mark's Square would feature in several of the works on display.
