Decorated with a classical maiden bearing a cornucopia, and a cherub on a rocky mound, the base mounted with sphinx-like busts, paper label with blue printed border inscribed '...32', various further chalk, pencil and crayon inscriptions to the reverse, decoration refreshed, minor losses

Specialist note

Shortly after ascending the throne in 1901 Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands (1880-1962) employed the fashionable London decorators Lenygon and Morant to carry out renovations at the Palace of Het Loo, Apeldoorn. During the renovations one of the things found to be surplus to the new schemes was a marble fireplace accompanied by its overmantel mirror and urn cresting, probably by Daniel Marot, who worked on the palace when it was built for William III in the late 17th century. The ensemble was brought back to London and advertised for sale by Lenygon and Morant in parts circa 1910.
In 1946 Professor Richardson moved to his new offices at 31 Old Burlington Street, the premises of Lenygon and Morant, and it was then that he acquired the offered panel.
