Specialist note
Sara, a small round painted terracotta platter, originates from the genre of ritualistic Bengal folk art. They were used for post-harvest worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune and were later utilised as decorative items, often seen in middle-class homes in Bengal. Bhupen Khakhar took the medium and made it into high art and beautifully used the circular form to create a narrative composition with free floating figures in motion.
